They consist of round pieces of coconut husk (flesh removed), sanded, prepared and consecrated in a Palo ceremony. The chamalongos come from the Congo-Cuban religion of Palo and are used as the primary method of divination with the spirits and powers.

The Merindilogún are cowrie shells with the backs removed, specially consecrated to the Orishas and used by Santeras and Santeros. They are considered the mouthpieces of the Orishas. Although each Orisha is 'born' with a set of shells, only Elegguá's shells are used for regular divination for the clients who come to them. This is due to Elegguá's role as Messenger of the Orishas.
